Time-Lapse Video: A 'Meteorological Bomb' In The Making

February 8, 2013

by: Eyder Peralta, NPR

We've told you that blizzard moving across the New England today may be historic.

Wes Junker, of the Capital Weather Gang, explained the science behind the storm. Essentially, he writes, this storm is powered by two interacting "'jet streaks,' or packets of energy within the different streams."

Now, for these two things to come together is extremely rare and when they do come together over New England, it'll cause a "meteorological bomb" that will dump more than two feet of snow in some areas, writes Junker.

NASA has just released time-lapse video that shows how this "bomb" is coming together:

Earlier today, NASA also released this satellite photograph:

A massive winter storm is coming together as two low pressure systems are merging over the U.S. East Coast. A satellite image from NOAA's GOES-13 satellite on Feb. 8 shows a western frontal system approaching the coastal low pressure area.
