Good News For Thanksgiving Travelers

November 21, 2011

by: Pat Hernandez

Houston gasoline prices fall nearly six cents last week, for an average of $3.14 a gallon. Good news for travelers this Thanksgiving holiday.

The price of gasoline in Houston was 6¢ cheaper than it was last week, and compares with the national average of $3.36 a gallon. Patrick DeHaan is senior petroleum analyst with GasBuddy.com. He says it reflects the drop in whole-sale gasoline prices, in what stations pay.

"It's among the lowest level that we've seen for wholesale gasoline prices since February, and that's what's helping push gas prices downward. So, certainly a little bit of a surprise coming ahead of Thanksgiving ."

He says that's good news for Thanksgiving travelers too.

"In fact, the Texas state average is just a penny higher at $3.15. Dallas prices, only $3.12 a gallon on average this morning. Average price this morning in San Antonio, $3.13. So certainly, some cheaper gas prices out there if you're traveling over the Thanksgiving Day weekend."

DeHaan says we may see that trend continue. The latest prices in Houston were are 10¢ a gallon lower than a month ago, but 47¢ higher than the price we were paying a year ago.
