Texas merchandise exports rose to $265 billion in 2012, up 6% from 2011. The state was one of 29 that set new records for exports last year, bringing nationwide export sales to $2.2 trillion.
Rebecca Blank is deputy secretary of commerce.
“The growth of exports in Texas reflects in part the national growth, but also reflects the real mix of strong products and strong markets that Texas exports to.”
Texas’ leading export categories were petroleum products, chemicals, and computer and electronic products — all of which are in growing demand around the world. The state benefitted from rising sales to oil exporting nations. Exports to Saudi Arabia rose almost 30% year-over-year, while sales to Venezuela nearly doubled.
