The house re-elected Republican John Boehner as speaker, losing just a handful of votes in the Republican-controlled chamber. Republican Congressman Kevin Brady of The Woodlands says the last-minute fiscal cliff negotiations and the lack of legislation to provide aid for hurricane sandy victims indicates that both parties need to work together.
"It is awfully toxic up here, just in my experience. And so we've got a lot of work to do to overcome that and agree to set the political scorekeeping aside and really get to work."
The election of the speaker came as the House and Senate ushered in a new Congress. Congressman Brady took the oath of office today for the ninth time.
