Helping Researchers Do Research

Friday, April 11, 2008

by: Capella Tucker

Getting new treatments to patients faster is a growing focus among researchers. Houston Public Radio's Capella Tucker reports one of the first centers to focus on this goal opens in the Texas Medical Center.

listen now:

The University of Texas Health Science Center in Houston got a $36 million grant from the National Institutes of Health.

The Center for Clinical and Translational Sciences will bring a number of health insitutions together to share ideas.

Doctor Frank Arnett Junior, the centers first director, says many resources will be immediately available.

That includes helping medical professionals through the regulatory paperwork for studies.

"We have the IRB, the Internal Review Board for Human Subject Approval, those folks are right here, we have research conflicts of interest people here, so it's one stop shopping, you can come up here and meet with all those different people and speed your application along."

The faster that's the done, the faster research starts.

Another element is getting doctors from different disciplines together to share ideas. Arnett says the goal for everybody is to help patients.
