Clean up Volunteers Needed
 March 5, 2010 by: Bill Stamps Organizers of the Great American Clean Up are hoping for thousands of volunteers tomorrow. They’ll be planting trees and picking up garbage at Wiess Park on Post Oak. Today they held a big campaign kickoff rally at Sam Houston Park. Bill Stamps has more. listen now: Organizers of the Great America Clean Up event are trying to make trash pick up fun. Even going so far as to have a hip hop artist entertain the crowd.  "Great American Clean Up..." This campaign kick off is to let the public know what’s going on tomorrow at Houston’s Wiess park and in the weeks and months to come. This is Matt McKenna Pres of Keep America Beautiful. "We call it the Great American Cleanup and it is our reaching out to three million volunteers across the country for a three month period of frenzied activity of cleaning up and planting and helping communities improve our environment." Michael Simmons is CEO of Greenstar, a Houston based recycling company, that’s also one of the sponsors of the Great American Clean Up. Simmons believes it’s important that local communities take more responsibility for some of the problems we face on the national level. "We believe that the global solutions to the many problems we face: protecting out environment, preserving our natural resources — the solutions begin locally and this event today is a perfect example of a local solution that can solve a global problem." Simmons hopes to have hundreds if not thousands of clean up volunteers tomorrow at Wiess Park. "To help us beautify the park, make it more useable for everybody. We’re going to be planting 600 trees beginning at 8am tomorrow. So we’d be happy to anybody of all levels of confidence to come out and join us."
