Houstonians Tell Their Stories
 November 19, 2009 by: Bill Stamps Many Houstonians will have a chance to record their personal family stories this month as the traveling tour known as Story Corps comes to town. The non-profit organization records the stories of city leaders as well as average citizens. All will be archived in the Library of Congress. Some may be broadcast here on KUHF. Bill Stamps has more. listen now: They say everyone has a story. Well if you’ve got one, downtown’s Discovery Green Park is where you can have it recorded. That’s where you’ll find an RV converted into a traveling recording studio. The non profit group Story Corps is there to record whatever you have to say. Nina Porzucki is one of the facilitators. "People start in many different ways. Sometimes there’s a little awkward giggle and sometimes, 'it's like mom, why don’t you tell me where you grew up'." Story Corps will be in Houston for five weeks. They kicked off the Houston Tour with a recorded conversation between Sheriff Adrian Garcia and his 85-year old mother. Garcia says he learned a few things he didn’t know.  "For example, I knew that they always said that we knew we couldn’t make it in Mexico City when ya'll were kids and that’s why we decided to come here. I didn’t know that it was based on the fact that we almost lost one of my brothers due to an illness." Once the mic is on you can talk about anything you’d like. "Some of my favorite conversations are just very in the present, two people sitting down talking about their relationship and what’s going on in their lives right now and they just have it recorded." And you never know what you might learn. "The other thing too I found out is that I’m the accident."
