Curator Jennifer Ward and artist Brian Piana show us around the FotoFest exhibition, POKE! Artists and Social Media, in which visual artists working in photographic and related fields respond to the proliferation of new information, communication, social-networking and electronic-media Internet technologies. We also speak with guest conductor Joel Smirnoff, Concertmaster Brian Lewis and Founder Alecia Lawyer about the opening concert of the season for River Oaks Chamber Orchestra...

Joel Smirnoff, President of the Cleveland Institute of Music and former first violinist with the Juilliard Quartet, conducts the first concert of the River Oaks Chamber Orchestra’s 5th season. ROCO concertmaster Brian Lewis, member of the music faculty at the University of Texas at Austin, will be the soloist in the much-loved Violin Concerto by bicentennial composer, Felix Mendelssohn … and the First Oboe parts will be ably rendered by the River Oaks Chamber Orchestra’s founder and Executive Director, Alecia Lawyer. Smirnoff, Lewis and Lawyer all join KUHF's St. John Flynn in the Geary Performance Studio for a preview session. At FotoFest, KUHF’s Meghan Hendley spoke with Exhibitions Coordinator Jennifer Ward, who curated the show, POKE! Artists and Social MediaShe also chats with Brian Piana, one of eight artists who are currently exploring the creative possibilities of on-line social networking and information technologies and whose recent projects in this field are included in the show. POKE! is on display through October 24thin the FotoFest gallery. Houston’s art-song society, Col Canto, launches its 2009-2010 season with a program of songs, chamber music and letters written by two of the most lyrical composer-musicians of the first half of the Romantic Era, siblings, Fanny and Felix Mendelssohn. The lone performance of the recital is tomorrow night at 8:00PM at The Bayou City’s First Unitarian-Universalist Church. Doctor Jeffrey Sposato, Associate Professor of Musicology at the University of Houston’s Moores School of Music, will give a pre-concert talk about the Mendelssohns and their music as well. Singers from Col Canto are joined by Dr. Sposato and KUHF's St. John Flynn for a preview session in KUHF's Geary Performance Studio. Listen Download
