public radio news and fine arts twenty four hours a day from houston, texas

KUHF Houston Public Radio presents a new Silent Film Concert Series featuring unique film presentations combining silent films from the 1920s with live, original scores composed and performed by Texas musicians. The series kicks off at 7:30pm on Friday September 12th at Discovery Green with a FREE screening of Metropolis composed and performed by Golden Hornet Project of Austin, TX. The series continues into the fall season at Discovery Green with a concert screening of Nosferatu on October 3rd and Phantom of the Opera on November 14th.
During the age of the Silver Screen, silent films traditionally featured live music. From the beginning, music was recognized as essential to silent film, contributing to the atmosphere and giving the audience vital emotional cues. Modern-day performers like Graham Reynolds and Peter Stopschinski of Golden Hornet Project are breaking new ground in composing contemporary soundtracks for silent films, revitalizing this unique type of performance art and generating a new respect for early attempts of cinema with a modern music approach.
KUHF’s Silent Film Concerts are co-presented with Discovery Green as part of the downtown park’s Arts Series programming.
