Area Nonprofit Learning Institution Makes the Top Grade

A prep school is named the area's top learning institution by a non profit organization that strives to improve the quality of life for children in Houston. The study compiled and analyzed data of schools from districts in Harris and Fort Bend counties, as well as Friendswood and Galveston. Houston Public Radio's Pat Hernandez has the story.

Researchers from Children at Risk used 14-indicators in compiling the top 10 schools, among them: graduation rate, college readiness, performance on standardized test scores and college entrance exams, average class size and socio-econoic status. Children at Risk president and CEO Robert Sanborn announced the top of the class.

"Our number one school this year...YES PREP!

Yes Pre School Director Keith DeSrosiers says the accolade validates their mission.

"We want to make sure we are staying true to our mission and our mission is serving underserved community in Houston. If we were looking at grades, if we were looking at their transcripts and standardized test scores, it would be really easy to say 'Yeah, let's take the top ten percent of the kids that apply or the top twenty percent. But that's not our mission."

Yes knocked off The HISD's Highschool for the Performing and VisualArts which tied for third with Clements Highschool, but HSPVA Principal Herb Karpicke says it's not enough to be a talented performer.

"But we also want to be second to none academically. This is important because young artists, I don't care how talented they are, how much they have an ambition to be in the arts and entertainment industry. They must have English, Math, Science, Social Studies. They have to be people who really get it."

HSPVA was chosen as a Grammy Signature school by the Recording Academy and Grammy Foundation. The complete list of the top ten schools rated by Children at Risk can be found on our website... KUHF DOT org.
