County Tax Office Milestone

County Tax Assessor-Collector Paul Bettencourt says since he launched his website in 2000, Harris County taxpayers have conducted more than one million transactions of all kinds electronically, on-line, to the tune of more than $500 million.
"You can pay all your property taxes in multiple forms with credit cards, E-checks, etc. You can also do your vehicle transactions on line for registration. You can basically make all the payments that you normally would make at a tax office, except you do it on line instead of standing in line."
Bettencourt says one million transactions represent about the same number of trips that weren't made to the county tax office, and the numbers are growing every year. He says it won't be long till the on-line tax office will be handling half a billion transactions in one year, instead of the 8 years it's taken to reach the first half billion. The reason is obvious: people like the convenience.
"We're giving people back their time. Half of these transactions are coming in on nights and weekends. We're open 24-7. And we're even taking transactions from people on active duty in Iraq and Afghanistan."
