Houston Mayor Bill White says the city of Houston has filed letters of intent to purchase property for two different soccer facilities. One would be a potential location for a major league stadium to house the Dynamo. White says the city hasn't finalized a deal with that team, but is in negotiations.
"We've been engaged, it's been serious, it's been going on for some time. They know that we will not do what Frisco and a number of communities have done which is use large amounts of taxpayer funds to fund the construction of stadiums."
The potential stadium site is east of 59 near downtown, but the city hasn't released specifics details. Independent of the Dynamo deal is a second site that would be a regional amateur facility. That will be located just west of 288, north of Almeda.
"The idea is about 18 fields -- big. It's going to be one of the biggest things in amateur sports to have occurred in this city in a long, long time."
Those fields could also serve as the practice facility for the Dynamo. White says he'll present this project to council within a few days and hopes to get approval to purchase the land in the next few weeks. Laurie Johnson, Houston Public Radio News.
