New Fugitive Unit in Houston

The Attorney General's office is opening a Fugitive Unit in Houston. The goal is to crack down on previously convicted sex offenders. Houston Public Radio's Capella Tucker reports

The AG's office started the Fugitive Unit in Austin and is now expanding its efforts to Houston and Fort Worth.  Since opening here, ten people have been arrested for not properly registering as a sex offender and 14 others were arrested for violating their parole or probation conditions.

"And frankly I think one of the most frustrating aspects about it all is that some of the children who are robbed of their innocence had that innocence stolen by criminals who law enforcement previously had their hands on.  They put these people behind bars, they got out from behind bars, and they're back out on the streets only to harm a child once again."

One of the ways that sex offenders slip through the cracks is by not registering if they move.  It's estimated that statewide between 400 and 500 sex offenders fail to register.  Capella Tucker, Houston Public Radio News.
