Jones Plaza was filled with the sounds of what organizers termed a prayer concert. The Salvation Army Harbor Light Choir opened the event with their well-known rendition of This Little Light of Mine. Houston Mayor Bill White then welcomed participants.
"There's a lot of things that are outside our control on this earth, including whether we'll wake up tomorrow morning. But there's some things that are within our control, and that's how we treat each other."
Ministers and clergy from more than a dozen churches were invited to lead prayers including St. Luke's United Methodist Church Pastor Dr. Tom Pace, who opened the event with a prayer of repentance.
"Because inside us is a dramatic realization that we are not what you want us to be. So we come to you today humbly, with heads bowed and spirits contrite."
Dozens of people gathered for both a sunrise and a lunchtime concert. The National Day of Prayer was established by a joint resolution of the United States Congress in 1952. Laurie Johnson, Houston Public Radio News.
