May Election Voter Registration Deadline Today

Midnight tonight is the voter registration deadline for the May 12 statewide election. Houston Public Radio's Jack Williams reports.

Harris County Voter Registrar Paul Bettencourt says turnout in May elections is usually very low.

"In some cases it's low single digits and what amazes me is that people will ignore the May election where the trustees and the city council members that are elected have more to do with your property tax bill than the election in November."

Thirty-five Harris County jurisdictions are conducting elections, including cities, school districts and utility districts. Bettencourt says there are several ways to register before the end of the day.

"You can get the form online at hcvoter.net. You can also register online. If you're moving within the county you can change your address and that's through the state of Texas website. You can always just do the tried and true method with is get a hold of a registration card and put it in the mail and get it postmarked by tonight."

Under state law, voters must be registered 30 days before an election. Once again that Harris County website is hcvoter.net.
