Christ Church is the Cathedral of the Episcopal Diocese of Texas, and it's been at the corner of Texas and Fannin, in various structures, since 1839. It expanded to take up the entire block in the 1990s, and now it has expanded over into the next block east of the church, and has built a new facility Cathedral Dean Joe Reynolds says has brought several important services together under one roof.:
"The Dunn Outreach Center houses the Beacon, which is the organization that provides food, laundry services and showers, but it also houses Compass, which is a ministry that is directed toward helping, especially, street people find employment."
It also has a clinic that provides physical and mental health care for the homeless and others who can't afford their own doctors. Reynolds says they're doing this because this is what churches are supposed to do.
"It's a continuation of the mission of the Cathedral, that's been a part of Christ Church for 169 years. It's always been part of what we understand the Christian gospel to be about, serving the poor."
The Bishop of Texas, The Right Reverend Don Wimberly, will join Mayor Bill White and other city and civic leaders Sunday afternoon to dedicate the Dunn Outreach Center and the other new facilities. There's more information on the website KUHF dot org. Jim Bell, Houston Public Radio News.
