The goal of this year's Comida Food drive is to collect and deliver food to at least 3500 families during the holidays. HPD Community Relations officer Nate McDuell says police officers and volunteers will be collecting donated food and money at 20 Houston area Fiesta stores later this week and this weekend.
"The collection dates for the Comida Food Drive this year are going to be Thursday November 30 through Sunday December third. On Thursday and Friday collections will be taken from 12 noon until 8pm. On Saturday and Sunday the collection times are 9am until 5pm."
Houston City Councilman Adrian Garcia says the donated food will be delivered first to more than 50 churches, synagogues, temples and mosques, each of which then takes it to people who need it.
"They all register with the Houston Police Department as participants in the program. We get them to identify the families for us. And then we just coordinate the logistics of delivering the number of families that they're trying to serve with the amount of food that we are able to collect."
The La Comida Food Drive started 21 years ago to help the Hispanic community, but it has grown, and it now helps people of all races, ethnicities, and religions. Jim Bell, Houston Public Radio News.
