Scholastic Art and Writing Winners
Today, we talk with Kris Reid of the Harris County Department of Education about this year's eighty-third annual Scholastic Writing Competition, as we begin our week of readings of prize-winning compositions by some of the Houston-area middle- and high-school students whose work garnered national awards in the contest. . .

Scholastic is the educational resources firm that publishes the magazine of the same name, and which had the foresight -- and the good business sense -- a few years ago to secure the rights to distribute the Harry Potter novels in the United States. This past school year, for the eighty-third time, Scholastic sponsored its national Art and Writing Competitions, recognizing excellence in achievement in those two creative areas by middle and high-school students across the country.  This week on "The Front Row," five young writers from the Houston area are going to read their essays, memoirs and stories that won awards on the regional and national levels.  The Harris County Department of Education administers the Competitions in this region.  KUHF's Bob Stevenson spoke with Kris Reid, the Department's English Language Arts Consultant, about the 2006 Scholastic Writing Awards. Audio here.

Rebekah Lim is a home-schooler from Houston who won Gold Keys, first-place honors on the regional level, and Silver Keys, Second Prizes -- in the national competitio, in both the Personal Essay and Poetry categories. She read both of her award-winning compositions, starting with her account of a harrowing real-life experience.  Audio here.

The Grand 1894 Opera House, GalvestonGalveston's Grand 1894 Opera House is the historic theater which each year hosts an eclectic series of entertainment and cultural events, from traveling Russian ballet and opera companies to Broadway musicals, down-home Texas singer-songwriters, and the annual visit by the guys from Greater Tuna, Joe Sears and Jaston Williams. Dean Dalton spoke with Executive Director, Maureen Patton, about what she's lined up at The Grand for the coming performance season.
