Grades one through eleven take the Stanford 10 test. Nearly all grade levels score at least the 50th percentile, with fourth grade scoring the highest at the 59th percentile. The lowest was ninth grade at the 49-th percentile. Spanish speaking students in grades one through eight take the Aprenda. The scores were even better with second graders scoring in the 82nd percentile. Superintendent Abe Saavedra says the scores are even better considering the students background.
"These results are especially important because HISD is one of the largest school districts in America and we have a much larger percentage of students living in poverty than the national average. Actually, 82 percent of our students in HISD are considered to be economically disadvantaged while only 30 percent of the national average is considered to be in that category."
