Harris County Tax Assessor-Collector Paul Bettencourt says there are a number of options for last minute-taxpayers who want to pay-up before tonight's deadline.

"We've got 15 branch offices that you can pay your taxes at just for the Harris County portion of your bill. In addition, you can get online at www.hctax.net, which means that you can get online 24 hours a day up through Tuesday at 11:59 pm. Or, you can always get your check in the mail and have it postmarked by January 31st."

Property taxes on the average home are about $3,400 a year, so payments that are a day late incur almost $240 in late fees, penalties that add up quickly.

"Every year, the Harris County Tax Office is now collecting over $100 million in late property taxes, penalties and interest, so it's an enormous amount of money that people pay after the deadlines. The moral here is, try go be early because it will cost you a lot less."

Bettencourt says the main tax office downtown will stay open until 6 p.m. today. You can find a link to the Harris County Tax Office on our website, www.kuhf.org.
