Intro who you are and what you hope to get out of this internship.
My name is Nimra Haroon and I am a sophomore at the University of Houston. I’m currently majoring in Journalism with a double minor in Spanish and Energy and Sustainability. I hope to learn several things from this internship. Primarily, I hope to develop my interests and gain significant experience and comfort working in a media environment. Second, I hope to learn practical and technical skills I can apply to projects or jobs in the future.
What drew you to KUHF?
I was drawn to KUHF because of my interest in the transparency of public radio, and interning with KUHF Houston is providing me that opportunity. I value a media channel that intersects journalistic duties with civic responsibility. Journalists have an obligation to provide honest, informative reporting, and I respect and hold value for KUHF for doing just that.
What is your favorite public radio show and why?
My favorite public radio stations are Marketplace, The Diane Rehm Show, All Things Considered because on the most ordinary day I learn about the most extraordinary things from an array of topics. Whether it’s the condition of garment factories, an on-air book review, or the condition of some local election, I’m always enlightened!
Who is your favorite reporter and why?
As an advocate of citizen journalism, my favorite reporter is the everyday citizen. With the new technologies and abundance of websites and networks to connect on, citizen journalism is paving the way for story-telling. We have so much so learn from each other and our individual backgrounds.
What are your favorite publications?
In print, I enjoy reading the New York Times, The Daily Cougar, and several magazines. Online, I enjoy reading BBC, Bloomberg, CultureMap, and NPR.
Who should I follow on Twitter and why?
I find Ellen DeGeneres, Mindy Kaling, Evan Smith, Anderson Cooper, CultureMap, David Carr, Paul Cheung, and Renu Khator particularly intriguing. A mixture of news, comedy, fun facts, nonsense, good pictures, and travel tips makes for a nice feed. For an afternoon pick-me-up, get mobile notifications from some of your favorite tweeters and you’ll never have a dull day.
What is your social handle or nickname?
Social handle is @nimraharoon. I definitely don’t have a nickname!
What social media accounts are you involved with?
When procrastinating from energy articles and Spanish homework, I am active on Facebook, Instagram, Pinterest, and while I don’t tweet, I have a Twitter account to be notified of deals from my favorite stores and restaurants, and stalk public figures that I secretly wish would tweet when they grab a cup of coffee from their favorite Houston café.
What is the best thing to do in Houston?
Certainly any native Houstonian or visitor should check out the incredible art and architecture the city has to offer. David Adickes Sculpturworx Studio is worth the pot hole-y drive that one may have to encounter when visiting the outdoor sculpture park. However, once you see giant presidential heads of George Washington and Abraham Lincoln, you will be amazed.
On the weekdays after work, stop by River Oaks Theatre, Sundance Cinemas, or the Museum of Fine Arts for what is typically a striking experience with the many mainstream, independent, and documentary films that run. Then you can drive home provoking yourself with the after-thoughts or questions that persist. Aside from that, exploring the Museum District, libraries, parks, diverse restaurants, and different neighborhoods of Houston is always satisfying!
What do you do when you are not at KUHF?
When I am not at KUHF or in class, I currently intern with United4Change, an independent, not-for-profit research and policy organization that advocates sustainable growth and development. We foster ideas into actions, promoting engagement through collaboration of agencies, corporations, organizations and individuals. I love watching sports and enjoy taking road trips to Texas towns when I can on the weekends. A self-proclaimed foodie, I also cook extensively as I am currently working on starting a small catering business. I also venture out into town looking for new restaurants, shows, and attractions!
