New Year Will Bring More Construction To US Highway 290

The U.S. 290 corridor carries about a quarter of a million vehicles a day, and TxDOT is now in the middle of a multi-year effort to improve the roadway between the 610 Loop and the Harris-Waller County line.
TxDOT's Karen Othon says work will start next month on two new segments.
That includes the portions of 290 between Mueschke Road and Telge, and between West 34th and the 610 Loop.
"We're going to have four general-purpose lanes in each direction going eastbound and westbound on the mainlanes, and then building a managed lane facility in the center of 290 which will carry both tolled and high-occupancy vehicle traffic."
Othon says they're hoping to keep any construction delays to a minimum, and if they have to close down the roadway, they'll do it at night or on the weekends.
And if you want to stay away from the construction altogether:
"We recently did an asphalt overlay on Hempstead Road. We know that a lot of motorists will be getting off 290 and taking Hempstead as an alternate route to bypass that construction."
Work is going on right now on 290 at the 610 Loop and Beltway 8. Othon says all 290 construction should be wrapped up in 2017.
