Former Prosecutor Makes District Attorney Candidacy Official

Kim Ogg is the first candidate to formally announce she will run for Harris County District Attorney in 2014.
Kim Ogg, a former prosecutor, anti-gang investigator and crime prevention leader, made it official and announced she will run for Harris County District Attorney as a Democrat. One Houston political analyst says Ogg will face a formidable challenge in Republican Devon Anderson, who was named to fill the term of her late husband, Mike Anderson.

At a press conference at the Harris County Democratic Party headquarters, Kim Ogg says her focus, if she becomes the next Harris County DA, will be to fight crime with 21st century tactics and to dismantle organized crime.

"The duty of the district attorney is not to simply convict, but to see that justice is done. And I intend to bring that idealism in all of our actions."

Ogg, a former felony prosecutor in the DA's office, says she will seek to re-prioritize the office's resources, including forfeiture funds.

"I think there's an over-criminalization right now, and a hyper-focus on individuals who are in possession of small amounts of drugs and other non-violent crimes, and I think it comes at the expense of a focus on crimes that really affect our quality of life and our economy."

Rice University Political Science professor Mark Jones says Ogg will be facing another seasoned professional in Republican Devon Anderson, a former prosecutor and judge, who was named by the governor to serve out the term of DA Mike Anderson, her late husband.

"In many ways, the race will come down to a broader Democratic vs Republican trend in the county, to the extent to which things turn blue, that's good for Ogg. On the other hand, if it retains its Republican bent as in say 2010, then that will be good news for Anderson."

While Ogg is the first candidate to formally announce, Anderson said she planned to lead the office for years to come. Voters will choose a new district attorney in November 2014.
