Twenty HISD Teachers Reassigned Amid Investigation Into Test Cheating

The Houston school district has removed 20 teachers from their classrooms as part of a probe into cheating on standardized tests.

Outside investigators are looking into cheating at two Houston elementary schools.

Eleven teachers have been reassigned from Jefferson Elementary and another four teachers from Atherton Elementary.

Five other teachers who previously worked at Jefferson have also been reassigned.

The suspected cheating involves tests taken last school year.

In public schools standardized tests have high stakes. That’s especially true in HISD where teacher bonuses and evaluations are tied to student scores.

In a statement Houston Superintendent Terry Grier says testing helps the district determine how much students are learning but that it’s important to have a thorough investigation.
