Mildred's Umbrella: "Carnival Round the Central Figure"

"Carnival Round the Central Figure," playwright Diana Amsterdam's abstract exploration of death, combines three seemingly unrelated narratives--coping with death being the only initial bond--into a mysterious and surprising whole. It's a kind of three-ring-hospice. The "Central Figure" is a middle-aged accountant, near death and enduring visiting hours when his oblivious wife, a concerned co-worker and her impatient boyfriend argue over the appropriate way to comfort the dying. The play takes surreal turns, as religious hysteria and supernatural phenomena affect the characters' abilities to accept the fact that we all have it coming. Director Jennifer Decker and choreographer Jennifer Wood talk with Houston Public Media's Troy Schulze.
