The Evelyn Rubenstein Jewish Community Center is hosting its 41st annual Jewish Book and Arts Fair. Assistant Executive Director at ERJCC, Marilyn Hassid.
“The Ann and Stephen Kaufman Jewish Book and Arts Fair is a cultural and literary event. It really is something for the community to be able to come in and learn a little bit about Jewish culture via author talks, films, music, and put books in their libraries whether they’re home libraries or school libraries.”
National Public Radio’s own Peter Sagal, host of the NPR news quiz Wait Wait…Don’t Tell Me!, opened the fair.
Other fair highlights include a screening of Victor Jansen and Eugene Illes film, The Yellow Ticket; the Oliver Lapin Family day; The Omer Avital Quintet, an author talk with Mitch Albom who penned Tuesdays with Morrie; a Local Literati evening celebrating local Houston authors; and Houston Grand Opera’s night of broken glass concert, Kristallnacht, commemorating Holocaust victims.
The entire Houston community is invited to these — and all of the fair events.
“Anybody can come-everybody can come. There used to be an old commercial that you don’t have to be Jewish to like Levy’s Rye Bread. Well, you don’t have to be Jewish to like or to come to the fair. You don’t have to be Jewish to belong to the ERJCC either for that matter. So, everybody’s welcome.”
The ERJCC has been a part of the Houston community for 77 years. In that time the organization has been a proponent of arts and culture in the city premiering musicians like Jerry Jeff Walker and Townes Van Zandt. During a time of discrimination the local JCC gave voice to African American artists and musicians like Leadbelly, Lightnin’ Hopkins, and muralist John Biggers.
