Mourners gathering at Lakewood Church this evening will include many former Houston Oiler players, including Mike Barber, who played tight end and now conducts prison ministry. He says the doors open at 6:45 p.m.
A video tribute to Bum starts around 7:15 p.m., followed by the service which begins at 7:30.
"We have about an hour and a half program. We'll have a roll-in from Terry Bradshaw. We'll hear from a lot of the former players as he called his kids: Dan Pastorini, Carl Mauck, Earl Campbell, Robert Brazille, and just a great lineup of players that meant the world to coach, and of course he meant the world to us."
He says the Oilers emulated the man who coached them.
"We fellowshipped to everybody, and it was just a very unique time, and that was all because of the spirit of Bum Phillips, and anybody that he was talking to, he always made them feel very important."
Phillips, the father of Houston Texans Defensive Coordinator Wade Phillips, took over as Oilers coach in 1975. He led Houston to 2 AFC Championship games before he was fired in 1980. He was responsible for drafting Heisman Trophy winner Earl Campbell, the player largely credited with the success of the Oilers.
