Fall Digital Intern: Lenard Smith

Intro who you are and what you hope to get out of this internship.

My name is Lenard Smith, Jr.  I am a 33 year old Louisiana native.  I relocated to Texas in 2005 following Hurricane Katrina. I have two kids, 1 wife, 1 fish and 1 dog. I hope to gain experience and also the opportunity to showcase my talent.

What drew you to KUHF?

I was drawn to KUHF by its size.  Based upon the fact that several news outlets in the Houston metro area are large, it would be difficult for someone to establish a foothold and receive an opportunity to showcase any talent that he or she may have without being swept up in the whirlwind that is reporting in a big city.   I was also drawn by the fact that it is the only listen to for news but also entertainment.  Why not work at a place that you are a fan of?

What is your favorite public radio show and why?

Wait Wait… Don’t Tell Me!  I am a Philomath and it feeds my desire to not only learn but to learn the  most trivial of things.

Who is your favorite reporter and why?

I don’t really have a favorite reporter.  I appreciate sound, unbiased reporting and solid writing.  Anyone that is capable of this will receive my admiration.

What are your favorite publications?

National Geographic, Sports Illustrated, GQ, DuPont Registry, Esquire, The New Yorker

Who should I follow on Twitter and why?
I have no idea.  I’m not a big Twitter person.

What is your social handle or nickname?
Most people back home know me as Lenny.   Here I am known as Lenard or “Kong” (Yes just like the great ape.  I got this name from my intensity in the gym)

What social media accounts are you involved with?
Facebook and Tumblr

What is the best thing to do in Houston?
Have breakfast at The Breakfast Klub, eat a cupcake from Crave, shop in Highland Village or the Galleria; and do your best to avoid the ever-present traffic on IH-45.

What do you do when you are not at KUHF?
Work in the yard, in the house or with my camera.  I also lift weights a lot and watch a lot of sports.
