Website Allows Houston Electricity Customers To Comparative Shop

The summer heat has air conditioners running longer than we'd like. One way to cut costs is by comparing electricity rates. That's where CenterPoint Energy's My True Cost Website can help.
Shane McLaughlin with CenterPoint is responsible for running MyTrueCost.com.
"The cool thing that we do that you're not going to see anywhere else on the internet is we bring in the smart meter data, and we use that meter data of how you use electricity to compute cost, the taxes and the fees, all the different way the electric companies create your bill."
He says the intent of TrueCost is to make electricity shopping smart and easy.
"Some people don't do it, because they think, 'If I pick the wrong one, what if it ends up costing me more now than what I have now?' And so, if you make the transaction fast and easy, and you give people what they're looking, and they're fairly confident that they're going to save what they expect to save, you've actually done that math homework, then that's what people like."
A customer's smart meter data can be used to help break down pricing plans for a savings. McLaughlin say1s there is work involved in getting participating companies to get their plans on to TrueCost.
"When you place an order on TrueCost, they're going to log in, and get that order, and make that switch. And they're going to have to come back and tells us that that switch happened. Just like when you order something online, and you get a little note that your package shipped, it's delivered at your house today . We do the same thing for customers."
CenterPoint does not provide electricity to consumers, but the website is designed to provide more information about their bill and how the costs might be lower with another provider.
