Next week U.S. Secretary of Education Arne Duncan is coming to Texas.
While he won’t be stopping in Houston, he is scheduled to visit schools in the Rio Grande Valley and El Paso.
It’s part of a back-to-school bus tour.
Duncan tells reporters on a conference call that his tour has a theme.
“The theme of our department’s annual back-to-school bus tour will be “Strong Start, Bright Future.” The theme speaks to the importance of starting the school year off right and providing all of our children with high quality preschool to prepare them ultimately for success not just in school, but in college, careers and life.”
Duncan has been pushing the Obama Administration’s initiative to provide preschool to all children.
It’s been a hard sell to Congress.
Duncan’s traveling to promote it and other issues on the president’s agenda for education.
“That includes … making college much more affordable, making cutting-edge learning tools available everywhere by connecting schools to high speed broadband access, supporting states and raising standards for all students, and developing systems to improve teaching and learning.”
Besides Texas, Duncan will visit New Mexico, Arizona and California on his tour for back-to-school.
