Special Committee To Advocate For Astrodome Renovation Plan

Harris County Judge Ed Emmett says before a special committee can be formed, it has to be clear who will take the lead.
"You know, I know former Judge (Robert) Eckels, former Judge (Jon) Lindsay, people at the Harris County Sports and Convention Corp. are talking about it. Now, how it gets formed, they have to wait and see."
The goal of the special committee will be to convince voters of the benefits of the plan recommended by the Harris County Sports and Convention Corp. That plan envisions a modern 35,000 square-foot multi-purpose venue that could host different exhibitions and community events, including activities of the Houston Livestock Show and Rodeo.
Emmett says he will be actively involved in the campaign but leave the lead to others. He says the key will be to get supporters of a Dome repurposing behind the recommended plan.
"Most voters have an opinion – either they want to save the Dome or they don't want to save the Dome. And those that are leaning towards saving the Dome, have to be convinced that this is a purpose that makes sense."
The Harris County Commissioners Court two weeks ago voted to put a bond election on the Nov. 5 ballot that will let voters decide for or against spending $217 million for the renovation.
If voters reject the proposal, the Dome will likely be demolished.
