Shuttle Carrier Aircraft to Be Transported to Space Center Houston Early Next Year

Officials today announced details about the relocation of the shuttle carrier aircraft that will be part of a permanent exhibit at Space Center Houston.

A Boeing crew will start disassembling the Boeing 747 shuttle carrier at the beginning of next year. The aircraft parts will then be transported from its current location at Ellington Field to Space Center Houston, the official visitors center for NASA's Johnson Space Center.

There, the plane will be reassembled and the space shuttle replica that's currently displayed at Space Center Houston will be mounted on top of it.

Together, the shuttle and the carrier aircraft will become a six-story high walk-through exhibition starting in 2015.

Elected officials and executives from NASA and the Space Center agreed that the exhibit will be one of Houston and Texas' biggest attractions and invaluable in inspiring young people to go into science or engineering.
