The Move Over/Slow Down law already applies to police officers, emergency responders and tow trucks. But in a few weeks, it will also apply to TXDOT crews.
It's pretty straightforward.
If you see any of the aforementioned groups on the side of the road, you need to move over or slow down.
Texas Department of Transportation spokesperson Mark Cross says it's a commonsense addition to the law.
"But oftentimes, we don't all often use our commonsense, especially when in the road and there are a lot of things going on. So this is just an effort to save more lives, reduce the number of crashes and incidents for motorists and workers as well."
Under the Move Over/Slow Down law, violaters can be ticketed and fined up to $2,000.
"We certainly have many incidents and injuries that result from drivers' inattention and traveling around work zones."
Cross says 103 TxDOT employees have been struck and killed by drivers since 1938.
