Houston Passes New York to Become Nation's Top Exporting Metro Area

New data from the US Commerce Department show Greater Houston is now the top exporter among US metropolitan areas.

Exports from the Houston metro area topped $110 billion in 2012, an increase of almost $6 billion from the year before. That was enough for the region to pass New York to claim the top spot. Houston had trailed New York as the nation's second-biggest exporter since 2006.

Congressman Gene Green represents the 29th Congressional District of Texas, which includes the Port of Houston.

"We're creating jobs and we’re exporting it, those products, so somebody else is paying to hire folks in our community."

Petroleum products, chemicals, and oil and gas extraction equipment accounted for roughly two-thirds of Houston area exports last year. The top three destinations for Houston exports were Mexico, Canada, and Brazil.
