Drivers Advised Of Major Improvement Project on Hempstead Road

TxDOT puts up signs ahead of resurfacing work on Hempstead Road near Mangum
A major road resurfacing project starts next week in northwest Houston. TxDOT says it's preparing the road for traffic detoured around U.S. 290 construction.

The big trucks that travel Hempstead Road have taken their toll over the years. And after all that stress on the roadway, drivers are left to contend with bumps, potholes, and patched pavement. But all that's about to change. Next week crews start work on a $3.6 million project to resurface an eight-mile stretch of Hempstead between Mangum and Brittmoore. TxDOT's Karen Othon says they're doing the work.

"To allow traffic on Hempstead to move more safety and efficiently during construction on 290 knowing that motorists will be using Hempstead as an alternate route, since it does run parallel to U.S. 290."

Othon says drivers on Hempstead need to watch out for lane restrictions starting Monday. That's when crews start preparing the road for new asphalt overlay.

"The first section they're going to begin working on is on the westbound direction of Hempstead from Gessner to Brittmoore, so they will reduce lanes to one lane in the westbound direction."

Othon says the Hempstead overlay project should be finished early next year. In mid-2014, TxDOT will begin a separate project to improve traffic signals and turn lanes. Meanwhile on U.S. 290, work continues on a multi-year project to widen the freeway and create new managed lanes between 610 and State Highway 99.
