In a short video posted on his campaign website, Patrick called for a shift in power in Austin.
"It's time for authentic conservative leadership. Someone with a proven track record, the energy and the passion to get the job done."
Brandon Rottinghaus is an associate professor of political science at the University of Houston. He says Patrick might be at a disadvantage when it comes to name recognition.
"That's something that Dan Patrick might not have despite being somewhat well-known from being in the Senate. There are some issues I think that might complicate his ability to become very quickly known statewide."
Rottinghaus also says Patrick's changing views on Dewhurst might come back to haunt him in the race.
"There was a kind of situation where he had rejected Dewhurst's leadership and then embraced it when he ran against Ted Cruz and now is rejecting it again. So how that's going to play politically for him against the other candidates in a race might be somewhat complicated."
The 63-year-old Patrick is a former sports broadcaster here in Houston and also owns a local radio station.
