Cameron Vallantye with the Houston chapter says volunteers have been operating emergency shelters and supporting first responders with food and supplies.
"And so the Red Cross operated three shelters overnight last night, and now we're determining what other services are going to be needed, if it's additional shelters. We're providing food for those who are able to get back to their homes and kind of determine what their next steps are going to be based on the damage. And we have clinical psychologists that can really work with folks and help them mentally process the disaster they've just gone through."
Vallantye says Houstonians have been asking how they can help.
"They can call 1-800-Red Cross. They can log on to Red Cross.org. Or they can text the word "Red Cross" to 90999 and that will add a $10 donation to their phone bill."
The Red Cross has a number of free smartphone apps that can be of assistance during disasters — one with a feature that helps loved ones know you are safe.
