The NRA is holding three days of meetings, speeches and exhibits at the George R. Brown Convention Center, and more than 70.000 people are expected to attend. This annual gathering is on the heels of the Newtown massacre and last month's failure of Congress to expand background checks for firearms purchases.

1. Celebrities and Politicians

NRA CEO Wayne LaPierre speak on Saturday, calling on the NRA's five million members to prepare for further attempts at gun control legislation. Other pro-gun advocates are lined up for the convention, including former Alaska Governor Sarah Palin, Texas Republican Senator Ted Cruz, Texas Governor Rick Perry, Louisiana Governor Bobby Jindal and former Pennsylvania Senator Rick Santorum. Radio commentator Glenn Beck hosts a rally on Saturday night, and guitarist and former talk show host Ted Nugent speaks on Sunday.

2. Guns

The NRA website says there are 550 exhibits and educational seminars. Exhibits from A-Z and featuring guns, knives, wildlife art, hunting gear and accessories.

3. Taxis

A.J. Mistretta from the Greater Houston Convention and Visitors Bureau says the NRA is expecting "a record number of attendees for its annual convention this year, somewhere between 75,000 and 80,000. The convention will be much larger than when Houston last hosted it in 2005 when it drew close to 60,000 attendees."

Houston has been well-versed with major events and conferences this year. The hotels are reporting great bookings this May.

4. Opposition

"Texans for Smart Gun Regulation" are planning a rally in response to the convention. The group is not opposed to the right to own a gun, but do support what they call "smart gun regulations." It appears to be in response to last month's failure of Congress to expand background checks for firearms purchase.

5. Media

You can count on Houston media to be there front and center. The NRA is expecting more than 800 reporters. Join the live blog with KUHF reporters on the scene. Send us your convention pictures and join in on the discussion starting at 9:00 a.m. on Friday.
