Astrodome Proposals Must Include A Way To Fund It

Proposals concerning the future of the Astrodome are now being submitted to the Harris County Sports and Convention Corporation. County Judge Ed Emmett says they must include a funding source, or they won't be considered.

Judge Emmett says it's time that the future of the iconic structure be decided.

"What this does is to use a phrase, it tells all those people with their private ideas, it's time to put up or shut up. I mean, if there's not gonna be a private redevelopment of the Dome, let's take that off the table and focus on what the county options are."

Any and all ideas will be submitted to the Harris County Sports and Convention Corporation until the June 10 deadline, and then Harris County Commissioners will decide which proposals warrant further discussion.

"And that's what we're gonna be doing on June 25th. Now, if somebody magically comes in and they have a great idea of a private use of the Dome and they've got the money between now and June 10th, I think everybody in this Commissioner's Court will celebrate. But, I haven't seen that yet."

One idea being submitted is from Chris Alexander's nonprofit group called Astrodome Tomorrow.

"We have a plan for the entire Reliant Park that deals with the resolution of the problem of Reliant Arena. We believe we've solved the Texans' problems, the Rodeo's problems, the OTC's. We're giving everybody in our plan a better experience for their vendors. We're gonna increase parking. We're gonna  increase transportation. We're gonna build a deck over the parking lot and put a park on top of it."

Any proposal that involves money to pay for it, and is agreed to by Commissioners, could be put on a ballot  for Harris County voters to decide.

While it has nothing to do with Houston bidding to host the Super Bowl in 2017, the Houston Texans and Houston Livestock Show and Rodeo have called for the county to move on the issue or risk the chance to land the big game.
