Astrodome Proposals Deadline Set For June 10th

The fate of the Houston Astrodome could finally be decided as a deadline for proposals was set. Voters will then determine the future of the aging structure.

The Harris County Sports and Convention Corporation approved a June 10th timeline for private developers to submit proposals on what to do with the Houston Astrodome. Discussions have been ongoing for years about what should happen to the 48 year old facility that has not been used in any form since 2009.

This is Corporation chairman Edgar Colon.

"What we're going to do is get final proposals from everybody, analyze them, and then mix them with our own ideas, and then make a recommendation to the Commissioner's Court."

Colon says even the plan submitted by the Houston Texans and the Livestock Show & Rodeo, that calls for demolition, will also be considered.

"We're considering that as one of the possibilities, one of the alternatives among six, seven or eight that we're considering."

Colon was mum though, about a plan recently proposed by the University of Southern California.

"They want to talk to us about those ideas, and for that they want a non-disclosure agreement. But I want to make sure we understand, we're not giving anybody an exclusivity about anything. Number two; at this point we're not making a decision on what to do with the Astrodome."

Harris County Judge Ed Emmett says he's glad a decision may finally come.

"I think what the Sports and Convention Corp wants, is some direction. And if we're gonna say look, we're not gonna move forward with the Dome in any form or fashion, then we can't just leave it sitting out here in the parking lot like a rusting ship."

The proposals will be presented to Harris County Commissioners June 25th, at their annual capital improvement plan hearing. Any agreed to plan will then be put on a November referendum for voters to decide.
