Rep. Gene Green Pushes For Keystone XL Approval

It’s been almost three weeks since the State Department issued its environmental review for the revised route of the Keystone XL Pipeline. The pipeline would transport extra heavy crude oil from Alberta, Canada to the Texas Gulf Coast.
The department is now taking comments from members of the public. Congressman Green used the occasion to forward a bipartisan petition to Secretary of State John Kerry endorsing the pipeline, signed by more than third of the House’s membership.
“We have five refineries in East Harris County, and each of those refineries could utilize that Canadian crude, if the pipeline was built.”
Environmentalists are concerned that refining the extra heavy crude would increase air pollution. Green says the State Department’s own study indicates Canada will produce and sell the crude whether or not the pipeline is built. The Obama administration is expected to rule on whether to approve construction by summer.
