The Katy Independent School District enrolls more than 60,000 students and has a budget of $170 million. From the KUHF Education Desk Laura Isensee has the story of an unlikely candidate who wants to help manage the suburban district.

For more than 20 years, Houston-area residents knew Wayne Dolcefino for his work as an investigative journalist, like this report on school truancy.

"But lack supervision at one school may be just the tip of an iceberg of truancy that every parent should be watching."

Dolcefino left TV reporting last year.

He wants to trade this title …

"Wayne Dolcefino 13 Undercover"

… for something totally different.

He's a candidate for the Katy School Board.

Dolcefino says he'll follow the same principles he did as a journalist.

"I spent my entire career exposing mismanagement and waste. I have a fundamental belief in the public's right to know. Katy schools are great for education. I want to help them make sure they're as transparent and accountable to the taxpayers, the parents, the kids, the teachers as they possibly can."

Dolcefino will run against two opponents: Tim Dietz and Joe Adams.

Adams has served on the Katy School Board for more than two decades.

Dolcefino says it's time for some new blood.

"He's been every single position on the school board, and he's been president of the school four times. In this country we don't elect the president of the United States more than twice."

Katy voters will cast their ballots in May.
