Houston's Most Stolen Vehicles In January

Every month the Houston Police Department releases a list of the top stolen cars in the city.  In January, 700 cars were reported as stolen.  And there are certain cars that just keep on making the list.
  1. HONDAS
They're everywhere.  And one place they're used for, according to HPD officials, is street racing. Since they're everywhere, if a motor blows out in a street race, thieves can steal another Honda and use it for its parts. It's not just Houston where these cars are hot.  2011 National Insurance Crime Bureau (NICB) show 1994 Honda Accords and 1998 Honda Civics are the country's most stolen cars.

  2. HEAVY-DUTY PICKUP TRUCKS
If it's a Chevy or Ford pickup, thieves may be eyeing your car.  These cars usually top the HPD's most stolen vehicle list. So why pickup trucks? According to a story we did in November 2011, stolen trucks are often used for human trafficking. They're hefty cars to drive off-road if they're followed by authorities.

  3. PRIUS
The eco-lover's car doesn't really make the list, locally or nationally.  Only 1 in 606 Prii—yes, that's the plural of Prius—are stolen nationwide, according to the NICB.  Compare that to steal rate of all recent car makes.  That rate is 1 out of 78. Experts say because of the Prius' sophisticated operating system, it's not that easy to chop up for parts.

Texas has the unfortunate distinction of being the state with the second most stolen cars in 2010.  That's second to California.  But some good news, Laredo is no longer auto theft capital of America. Because of some police initiatives, theft has fallen, and Fresno, California bears that title.
