It’s difficult enough for human resources executives to keep tabs on budding office romances. But Facebook and other social networking sites are making it ever easier for co-workers to connect outside the workplace.

“Companies, and HR executives in particular, worry about these things night and day.”

John Challenger is CEO of global outplacement firm Challenger, Gray & Christmas.

“There’s always risk, particularly in the role of supervisor and someone who works for him or her, in seeing an office romance occur. Those are situations that, if the romance doesn’t continue, can lead to sexual harassment situations for an organization.”

Challenger says many companies still lack a formal policy regarding office romance. He says workplace romances gone sour can hurt productivity, even when they don’t lead to a lawsuit.
