Boy Scouts of America announced today that the organization will take action on the controversial issue at its national meeting in May. Protesters on both sides rallied at BSA headquarters in Irving outside Dallas.

Linda Sanders is director of marketing and communications for the Sam Houston Area Council of Boy Scouts of America. Its membership numbers 50,000 scouts from 16 counties around Houston.

She says scout leaders across the country have been doing their best to handle a very delicate matter.

"I have to say that I haven't personally received a lot of positive feedback, but that isn't that there isn't some out there. I think people that are more concerned on the negative side are voicing their opinion."

She says they've received a lot of feedback from callers and email on both sides of the issue.

"The bottom line is that America needs scouting, and our policies must be based on what is in the best interest for our kids. And so we are going to go forward, and we're going to stay focused on what unites us, which is reaching and serving young people, to help them grow into good strong citizens."

BSA will study the membership policy further before deciding from its 1,400 voting members of the national council.
