U.S. small business employment rose just over 0.1% in January compared to December. At Texas small businesses, job growth was virtually flat.

“Small business employment, as a general matter, is doing sort of poorly compared to overall employment.”

Susan Woodward is an economist for Intuit.

“It fell for a longer time, and the recovery has been weaker. And then we had this odd spell of small business employment declining from April to October, but now it’s rising again, but it’s rising proportionately less than overall payroll employment is rising.”

The average monthly pay for small business employees fell 0.2% in January to less than $2,700. Monthly hours dropped nearly 1% to just over 105 hours.
