Holiday Break Thins Competition For Job Seekers

Job seekers often put their searches on hold during the holidays That's why this week might be a good time to kick a job search into high gear.

Many offices drop down to skeleton staffs between Christmas Eve and New Year’s Day. With so many people on holiday, it’s easy for the job seeker to take a break as well. That translates to a week of reduced competition for those job seekers who stick it out.

Of course, some sectors present more opportunities than others. John Challenger is CEO of global outplacement firm Challenger, Gray & Christmas.

“Some of the stronger areas are health care. We’ve had what looks to be a relatively strong retail season. That’s good, because it suggests that there’ll be more jobs there and that the consumer’s beginning to spend more freely. Technology is strong. Energy has been a very robust area of job market growth over the last few years and on into the future.”

Challenger, Gray & Christmas is suspending normal operations tomorrow and Friday to provide free job search counseling by phone. To participate, call (312) 422-5010 between 9 a.m. and 5 p.m. on December 27th or 28th.
