Construction Starts For Navigation Beautification

With the new Dynamo stadium and light rail moving in, Houston's East End is undergoing an extreme makeover. As part of it, construction started today on Navigation Boulevard.

The idea is to transform Navigation into the “East End’s new Main Street,” according to the Greater East End Management District. From Delano to St. Charles Street, the four-lane boulevard will have a pedestrian promenade with wide sidewalks and an esplanade in the middle that would house a farmers’ market and a street cafe.

The beautification is made possible by a $5 million federal stimulus grant and was recently approved by the City of Houston.

Patrick Ezzell with the Greater East End Management District says he has been working with East End residents for two years.

“And through those meetings one of the things that kept coming up was Navigation Boulevard, because it used to be this active place with retail and restaurants and things going on and they basically said they’d like to see Navigation become again like ‘el corazon de la comunidad’ – the heart of the community.”

Part of that could also be the resurrection of a streetcar that would connect the area with downtown. It would also make it easier for residents to get to places within the neighborhood, like the BBVA Compass Stadium, where the Houston Dynamo play.

Ezzell says the area’s development has brought much attention to the East End and is attracting new businesses.

“I think all combined it has created a real focus and interest in the East End, with the Dynamo stadium, the light rail coming through and with revitalization in this neighborhood, you have people looking towards the East End.”

The construction on Navigation is scheduled to be finished in the fall of next year.
