Governor Perry has set Saturday, January 26th as the date of the special election to fill the Senate District 6 seat that Gallegos held until his death in October. There wasn't enough time to change the ballot for election day in November and Gallegos won re-election posthumously.

Candidates have to file their intention to run for the seat with the Secretary of State by December 27th, but the field to replace Gallegos has already been mostly defined. Former County Commissioner Sylvia Garcia and State Representative Carol Alvarado have already announced they're running for the seat and have kicked off their campaigns.

Both have East End ties and long political resumes in the Houston area.

Early voting for the special election begins January 9th and runs through January 22nd. The winner will serve a four year term.
