The day after Thanksgiving is traditionally the biggest sales day of the year. But this year, several top retailers are looking to get a jump on Black Friday crowds.

Target and Toys “R” Us are the latest major retailers to announce they’ll be opening as early as 8 P.M. tonight. It’s part of an effort by big box stores to hold onto customers expected to shop online throughout the holiday.

The move has led to push back from some employees who’ll have to spend part of the holiday away from home. Several Target employees and their families have filed petitions on Change.org asking the store to rethink the move.

John Challenger is CEO of global outplacement firm Challenger, Gray & Christmas.

“The question for employees is, is it really better to work on midnight the day after, or would you rather work on Thanksgiving. I don’t think it’s clear cut that employees are getting the bad end of this bargain.”

Challenger says if the early sales pay off, there’s little doubt retailers will continue the practice in the future, possibly extending store hours into Thanksgiving afternoon.
